The subject matter of this research is of immense importance. There are numerous scholarly works on the chinampa agricultural system regarding its history, form, size, productivity and its relevance for today’s agricultural sustainability, among many other things. There is no opposition to the fact that the chinampas were used and expanded widely in the Aztec empire period, more than any other period in the history of this system of agriculture. It is then logical to assign an important role to the chinampa agricultural system in most aspects of Aztec life. However, to date the numerous scholarly researches that investigate chinampa agricultural system, with few exceptions, are limited to the inherent form and qualities of this system.  There is a dire need to study the chinampa agricultural system in the context of its role in Aztec state- creation and empire-building.

In searching for the scholarly sources I have found that variables such as religion, warfare, commerce, and tributary system have taken the bulk of scholars’ efforts in explanation of the Aztec empire. I believe it is time that Chinampa Agricultural System also be studied as rigorously as the other variables. My hope is that this research has shown that the chinampa variable can and should be regarded on a par with other variables so that we can shed a new light in understanding and explaining the Aztec empire building process...

This study has engaged in a preliminary search in uncovering  evidence for the hypothesis that the chinampa agricultural system was in fact one of the most essential factors that gradually led the Aztecs to, among other things, pursue their religious ideologies. Driven by those ideologies, they conquered their neighbors and gradually, on one hand, created the Aztec empire, along with all the grand culture, history, artifacts, science, etc. and, on the other hand, caused immense pain and sufferings to their enemies.
